Parents react to suspicious package found at middle school

POOLER, GA (WTOC)- On Friday, parents lined the Pine Barren Road, trying to retrieve their kids. The middle school students were relocated to West Chatham Elementary School after a suspicious package was found at West Chatham Middle School.

Savannah Chatham Metro Police and school officials advised parents to leave their kids in school and that the process was a precautionary measure, but many parents were too concerned and showed up anyway.

Daycare shut down after 2 year old wanders away

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC)- State regulators shut down a home daycare in Port Wentworth Thursday, two days after a toddler wandered away.

She was gone for more than an hour, but when police knocked on the door, they say daycare workers didn't even know the 2-year-old girl was gone.

Shauna Rice, owner of Animated Kids Daycare and daycare worker Edma Herrington were charged with cruelty to children, reckless conduct and contributing to the depravation of a minor.

DIRTT developing a new business culture

POOLER, GA (WTOC)- They call themselves DIRTTbags, and they couldn't be prouder about it, the employees of DIRTT Environmental Solutions.

"DIRTTbag,'' says DIRTT community relations manager Laura Lee Bocade, "is a good thing here.''

DIRTT  stands for Do It Right This Time and is the company's name, as well as its core philosophy.

Police: 2 year old swam in alligator pond after wandering from daycare

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC)- A state regulating agency is investigating a Port Wentworth home daycare after police found a 2-year-old girl playing in the street.

Police say the girl was missing for more than an hour, but daycare workers never knew she was gone.

It happened in the Newport subdivision Tuesday. A neighbor, 20-year-old Brianna Brown, was walking home from the park with her niece and says she spotted the girl giggling alone in the middle of the street.

"She was soaking wet, and her diaper was full," Brown said.

Port Wentworth Police get public safety grant

PORT WENTWORTH, GA (WTOC)- The Port Wentworth Police Department has been awarded a public safety partnership grant totaling $15,000 from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety in Atlanta.

The incentive grant, which will last through September, is designed for smaller law enforcement agencies that have partnered with GOHS and excelled in participating in highway safety initiatives as well as making their communities safe during the previous year.

Garden City awarded $3.1M Georgia Fund loan

GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC)- Garden City has been
awarded a Georgia Fund loan of more than $3.14 million from the Georgia Environmental
Finance Authority. 

The city will also refinance
existing loans with a lower interest rate. Under the plan, the city will pay a
1.40 percent interest rate on the new 20-year GEFA loan for $3 million.

to finance new water and sewer related capital projects that Garden city will initiate

Guardrail repair scheduled for this week

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC)- Emergency guardrail repair work is scheduled to take place this week in Chatham, Glynn and Appling counties.

Work will be done from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, weather permitting. Work canceled due to bad weather will take place 24 hours later.
